‘GGG’ back in the ring: Golovkin-Murata, December 31 in Japan , Boxing GGG vs Murata fight time .
Kazakhstani boxer Gennady Gennadievich Golovkin is set to make a return to the ring before the end of the year. The 39-year-old has lined up a fight with Ryota Murata in the latter’s native Japan on December 31.
The exact details of the fight are expected to be confirmed shortly and will mark the end of a hiatus for Golovkin, who has only fought twice in two years and not since December 2020.
In those most recent fights, Golovkin won and defended the IBF middleweight belt.
Murata, meanwhile, is in a similar situation and hasn’t actually fought since 2019, when he retained his WBA middleweight belt against Steven Butler in Yokohama.
The news does, however, mean that the potential trilogy with Saul Alvarez may have to be put on the back burner for Golovkin. The Kazakhstani fighter has only lost once in his career, against Alvarez in 2018, although he also beat him the year before. A third fight to settle the score has been rumoured for a while, but first up is Murata.
